Although very close to Hamilton Pool, many people don’t know about the hidden treasure just west of the Pool,Westcave Preserve Park. Westcave Preserve is an outdoor discovery center enjoyed by both children and adults. It’s a special Hill Country environment with plants that are unique in the area.
It was formed in a similar way to Hamilton Pool, but continuously dripping water running over the limestone created a cave, complete with a waterfall and lush vegetation. Westcave Preserve is a great alternative destination to the ever crowded Pool, and boasts a beautiful informative visitor’s center. Even the history of the Preserve’s rescue is a great story. An Austin resident, John Watson, bought the abused 27 acre campground in 1974, and established it as a preserve. Its restoration and preservation have been labors of love for many Hill Country residents since that time.
The Preserve is unique in a fascinating way. The almost tropical climate at the canyon floor, in the summer often fifteen to twenty degrees cooler than the area at the top, permits the growth of lush vegetation, including cypress, sycamores, mosses, ferns, columbine, and wild orchids. This also accounts for the high count of overwintering birds.
So, as you leave Hamilton Pool, or pass it by, Westcave Preserve is only 2 miles away. Just cross the Pedernales River, and there you are, ready to enjoy the visitors center and take the tour. The Preserve is open most Saturdays and Sundays with tours at 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 4pm. (Also check the Westcave Preserve schedule for Star Nights. During these events, you can gaze at a dark sky and learn about the pinpoints of light sparkling overhead.)
Don’t forget about another Round Mountain, Texas, jewel just a little ways up Hamilton Pool Road—Westcave Cellars Winery and Vineyard. Allen & Margaret invite you to try a refreshing wine tasting of great Texas wines to complete your Hill Country adventure.
